The earlier name of Umakanta School was Agartala HE School. It was founded in 1890 by the king of Tripura Maharaja Birchandra Manikya. It is the oldest as well as the first Educational Institution of Tripura . It was developed more by the king Radhakishore Manikya after he took the throne of Tripura kingdom in 1896. In 1904 the school was renamed as Umakanta Scool after the name Sri Umakanta Das , the prime minister of Tripura kingdom in recognition of his noble activities. The school is a land mark in the Educational history of Tripura.
