We at Mahatma Gandhi Cancer Hospital, follow standard guidelines which are evidence based. Undoubtedly, every additional investigation adds to more information. But the information doesn't actually change the line of final therapy. Moreover, some conflicting information causes wrong decision making and curative patients get less treatment. There are standard guidelines for PET Scans. However, PET scans have limitations and should not be viewed as panacea.
Detailed review Alert! I am not a medical professional hence please read accordingly. My father was diagnosed with head and neck advanced-stage cancer and the treatment plan was made with extensive discussion with Sharad sir. During the treatment, we did recommend Sharad sir twice to do PET Scan as it would help us to early detect the spread in other body parts. He took a judgment basis his experience that it is not necessary. We did not push him after all he is the expert. After 2 chemo cycles, we did have surgery which was also successful in removing the tumor from his mouth. After surgery, he went through 33 radiations and we were under the assumption that we have won the battle. But the one judgment of not doing a PET Scan went awfully wrong. He had a tumor in his lung as well which was not assessed and treated right from the start. Finally, we were at the mercy of God and my father could breathe for only 2 weeks after the tumor was detected in the lungs as well. In the last 2 weeks, we did consult a doctor from Tata and he was also of the opinion that for advanced-stage cancer, the PET scan is a must. The objective of the post is not to malign the reputation of the hospital as it might have cured many patients but to share an experience.
