I have been associated with Adyar Cancer Institute since 2017 as attendant to my father, who was 71 years old when diagnosed with Prostate cancer. The initial days in the OPD (till the treatment plan was finalized) were anxious and there was a lot of waiting time. While I almost believed that the appointments were a sham, it was only later that I realized that the hospital serves a huge number of patients. Since the treatment procedures are followed meticulously, it takes time and cases needing urgent intervention are prioritized. Once treatment plan is confirmed, everything is streamlined. The usual anxieties of a cancer patient / attendant about the cost and duration of the treatment were there but these were put to rest with time once we underwent the prescribed tests and met the doctors. Whatever was lacking in my initial experience with the heavily loaded support staff, it was over-compensated by the competent doctors at Cancer Institute. Right from the very lively Dr. Anand Raja (SOG), no nonsense Dr. Venkat (MOG), Babu Sir (PRO) to the nurses in the OPD, it seemed they all were unitedly fighting my father's cancer along with us. It's been 4 years of regular reviews and visits to Cancer Institute. I understand their working better now to say that they are giving their best keeping in mind the best interests of their patients. It is comforting to know that my father's treatment is in safe hands. Of course, it is different from corporate run hospitals in look and feel as it is run by a trust that works to extend treatment to a maximum number of patients from different economic backgrounds, using the available resources and donations. I find their charges valid and reasonable, given we get access to top notch doctors, even though they do not operate out of swanky plush facilities. It was inspiring to see their operations during the peak of COVID pandemic, where the team took the challenge of protecting their patients (in-patients and out-patients) in the best possible way, abiding by stringent protocols in place at all times. My pranaams to Dr. V. Shanta and the mission this hospital stands for.

Best hsptl for cancer in chennai
... I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer six years ago; I was 71 years then. My son took me to 5 or 6 corporate hospitals in Chennai who unanimously opined that I needed to be operated. I was apprehensive – operation at that advance age and the prospect of moving around with a urine bag was unnerving. Luckily one of my colleagues suggested that I should visit Adyar Cancer Institute before taking a final decision, that proved to be a turning point. My case was entrusted to Dr Anand Raja. He was very patient and sympathetic; after thorough examination he explained why it is better to go in for radiation rather than operation. I was greatly relieved at his suggestion; I am greatly indebted to him. The next one and half months I had radiation under the supervision of Dr Alexander; the technicians and the doctors were very professional and took personal care of each patient. The radiation was followed by quarterly reviews by Dr Anand Raja who monitored my progress. I am completely cured now. Thanks to Dr Anand Raja, Dr Alexander, the technicians, and the nursing staff of Adyar Cancer Institute. The scale at which the Cancer Institute operates is really to be admired. The recent pandemic and the covid protocols are indeed a great challenge for the organization when they have to deal with hundreds of patients on day-to-day basis. But they are equal to the challenging task. Kudos to the Adyar Cancer Institute for its noble work! P R Rao
